The Method

Why This Actually Works

Most people try to memorize by reading something over and over. Science says that barely works. Memorize by Heart uses a different approach, one built on how your brain actually learns.

The Framework

Three Phases of Memorization

Every game in the app belongs to one of three phases. Move through them in order and you will build recall that sticks for months, not hours.

1
STEP 1

Familiarize

Learn It

Before you can recall something, you need to absorb it. These games are low-pressure: no scoring, no stress. You are just getting the words into your head through exposure and listening.

Tap to Reveal

Uncover the text one word at a time. Say each word aloud as you go, then let your brain anticipate what comes next.

Slider

Drag a slider to progressively reveal the passage. Great for building a soft sense of the text rhythm and flow.

Listen

Hear the text read aloud at adjustable speeds. Your ears reinforce spoken language differently than written words do.

The science: Passive exposure without retrieval is not enough. Tap to Reveal, Slider, and Listen create sensory pathways that make later practice feel less forced.

STEP 2

Solidify

Practice It

Now it is time to work for it. These games introduce real challenges: gaps in the text, scrambled order, missing letters. You are forced to retrieve the words, not just read them.

First Letter

Only the first letter of each word is shown. You must recall every word from a thin clue.

Blanks

Strategic words are hidden and replaced with multiple-choice options. Pick the right one, or guess and learn from your mistakes.

Scramble

Lines and phrases are jumbled. Drag them back into the right order. You will quickly realize you know more than you think.

The science: The desirable difficulty effect says recall is slightly effortful, memory is stronger and longer-lasting. These games sit in the sweet spot: challenging enough to matter, not so hard that you quit.

STEP 3

Evaluate

Test It

No hints. No help. This is where you find out what you actually know. Test games generate your Mastery Score and determine how your practice should progress.

Type It

Type the entire passage from memory. Every keystroke counts. First-letter mode is available as a stepping stone before full recall.

Multiple Choice

Reconstruct the passage word by word, choosing from six options each time. Less scary, still highly effective.

Speak

Recite aloud and the app transcribes your speech in real time, highlighting every word you got right or missed.

The science: Testing yourself, even before you feel ready, is one of the most evidence-backed memory techniques in existence. It is called the Testing Effect, and it dramatically outperforms rereading.

Built-In Review Schedule

Smart Review, Not More Review

Practicing something once and never touching it again is how you forget. The app tracks your performance and reminds you to revisit each memorization at exactly the right moment, right before it fades.

Each time you successfully practice, your review interval grows. Struggling resets it. This is spaced repetition, the same technique used in language apps and medical school flashcard systems.

Evidence-Based

Built on Memory Science

Every feature in this app maps to a real, peer-reviewed principle of how human memory works. This is not gamification for its own sake, it is gamification with a purpose.

Spaced Repetition

You do not need to practice every day; you need to practice at the right times. The app schedules reviews right before you would naturally forget, maximizing long-term retention with minimum effort.

Active Recall

Passively rereading something is nearly useless for memory. Every game here forces you to retrieve information, which is exactly what builds durable, long-term recall.

Interleaving

Mixing different types of practice, visual, auditory, typing, speaking, creates richer memory traces. That is why this app has 10 different games instead of just one.

Immediate Feedback

The moment you get something wrong, you know it. Instant correction is far more effective than reviewing at the end because it prevents mistakes from getting baked in.
