Fill in the Blank Guide: Lock Words in Context

Use Fill in the Blank to test recall in context—choose the right words, feel the cadence, and prep for Type it.

Game Guide3 min

Fill in the Blank turns your passage into context-rich cloze practice. Two words in every five hide (common fillers stay visible), and each blank gets up to six believable options pulled from your own text. Use it to confirm you know the exact phrasing before you graduate to Type it.

Quick start (2 minutes)

  1. Open your Memorization and choose Fill in the Blank.
  2. Work one paragraph at a time. Tap the right option for each blank, then say the full sentence aloud so the word locks into the cadence.
  3. Finish the pass to see accuracy and the words you missed. Tap Reset for a fresh set of blanks and run it again.

How blanks and options are chosen

  • Meaningful blanks only: Two positions per five words hide, but common words like “the” and “and” stay visible so effort lands on key terms.
  • Six options per blank: Choices come from your passage (not random gibberish). Wrong taps vibrate and mark red, nudging you to review before moving on.
  • Punctuation stays put: Commas and periods remain so you practice phrasing, not just vocabulary.
  • Progress + stats: The progress bar rises as you solve; the Stats view shows accuracy and highlights weak words so you know what to reread.

A repeatable Fill in the Blank routine

  1. Preview the chunk: Read once with blanks visible. Predict the missing words before tapping to wake up context clues.
  2. Accuracy pass: Tap answers slowly and speak each sentence. If you hesitate, glance at the surrounding words first; use elimination (tense, number, rhyme) before guessing.
  3. Reset and vary: Hit Reset for a new blank pattern. Run the same chunk again; new gaps force you to know every position, not just the first set.
  4. Proof without help: Close the options and recite the chunk aloud. If two or more words feel shaky, do one more Fill in the Blank pass, then a quick Type it run for confirmation.

Pair Fill in the Blank with other games

  • New material: Tap to Reveal (phrases) → Fill in the Blank → Multiple Choice for full proof.
  • Names, dates, and titles: Slider with lower letter visibility → Fill in the Blank on that line → First Letter to cement spelling.
  • Order + detail: Sentence Scramble to set sequence → Fill in the Blank for phrasing → Listen once to mirror cadence.

Troubleshooting

  • Stuck between similar options? Match tense and number to the surrounding words; punctuation often hints which choice fits.
  • Accuracy stuck below 80%? Shorten the section to 1–2 sentences, reset, and run two fast passes before trying the full paragraph again.
  • Keep missing the same blank? Say the sentence aloud with a deliberate pause where the blank sits, then immediately tap the answer and repeat the full line.
  • Too easy? Reset for a new gap pattern and avoid looking ahead at the options until you’ve predicted the word in your head.
