Listen Game Guide: Memorize by Ear

Use Listen to rehearse passages hands-free—tune the voice, speed, and pitch so sound locks the text in place.

Game Guide3 min

Listen turns any Memorization into guided audio. It is perfect for commutes, pacing practice, or language lines where hearing the melody matters. Play, tweak the voice, and shadow the sound until you can say every line without looking.

Quick start (2 minutes)

  1. Open your Memorization and choose Listen.
  2. Press Play. Follow the highlight as words are read aloud.
  3. Adjust Speed until you can repeat each line without rushing; start near 1 (Normal) and nudge up only after clean runs.
  4. Pick a Voice that matches your language or accent. If you like the combo, hit Make default so future sessions start the same way.

Dial in the sound

  • Speed slider: Ranges from 0.25 to 2. Use 0.75–1 when learning a fresh paragraph; bump to 1.25–1.5 once you can shadow comfortably.
  • Pitch slider: Lower pitch (0.75–1) for calmer delivery; slightly higher (1.25) can wake up boring sections.
  • Voices list: Choose the clearest accent for your passage. If the current voice clips consonants, swap to a less robotic option before changing speed.
  • Make default: Locks your chosen speed, pitch, and voice for all Memorizations so you are not recalibrating every session.

Routines to lock it in

  1. Shadow and say: Play at 0.75–1. After each sentence, pause and repeat it aloud without looking. Resume and continue. Do two passes before speeding up.
  2. Commute-friendly loop: Turn on Repeat, set speed to 1, and let browser or natural voice playback keep looping until you pause or turn repeat off.
  3. Performance polish: Play at your target pace (1–1.25). After a full pass, press Play again and try to speak one line ahead of the audio. If you fall behind, slow to 0.75 for that paragraph, then return to your target speed.

Pair Listen with other games

  • Learning day: Listen (shadow at 0.75–1) → Speak. Hearing it first helps to speak it later.
  • Order repair: If transitions feel shaky after Sentence Scramble, run one Listen pass to hear cadence, then immediately recite without audio.
  • Details drill: For names, numbers, or foreign phrases, drop pitch, slow to 0.75, and replay the sentence three times before returning to normal speed. Follow with a quick Tap to Reveal check.

Troubleshooting

  • Audio is choppy or silent: Switch to the latest Chrome; Listen relies on browser speech support.
  • Voice feels flat: Raise pitch a notch and swap voices before changing speed. Variety often fixes intelligibility.
  • Getting lost mid-pass: Watch the progress bar; if you drift, pause, back up one sentence, and replay at 0.75 while tracing with your finger.
  • Still not sticking: Shadow once, then immediately say the entire paragraph without audio. If you miss more than one idea, repeat a slow Listen pass and try again.

Listening is the fastest way to load a passage into your ear. Keep shadowing until you can stay a sentence ahead of the voice, then you will know the words are yours.
